World Spirometry Day 2012: Join the race for healthy lungs!

We are happy to present World Spirometry Day 2012!!!
Respiratory Decade will participate actively in promotion and organization of this Global event!  World Spirometry Day is a very important Day for all persons with respiratory conditions and for doctors! Its one more chance to make visible all Respiratory Non-Communicable Diseases!

World Spirometry Day (WSD) will take place again on 27 June, 2012 - the Olympic year.

The campaign will focus on sport and the lungs, and resources will be provided for all those organising testing events related to the Olympic theme. Testing will not be limited to this day alone and participants are encouraged to capitalise on the Olympics and hold events on the run up to the games on July 27 and beyond.

Lung champions is a campaign which is promoted by European Lung Foundation. You can nominate Lung Champions who can help raise awareness of the importance of activity and sport for lung health. Lung Champions can be young athletes with cystic fibrosis, a COPD patient taking part in a pulmonary rehabilitation programme or an Olympian with asthma.
Please use Lung champion nomination form for your  Lung Champions!

We want to remind you about success of First World Spirometry Day 2010! It was inspired by Professor Nikos SIAFAKAS President of European Respiratory Society:  “Increased awareness about lung health is vital, and by taking a simple and painless test that only takes a few minutes to perform, everybody can find out about the state of his lungs” .

7 Reasons to attend European Respiratory Society Congress, Amsterdam 2011

Dear friends,
as you may already know the European Respiratory Society Annual Congress will take place in Amsterdam, 24-28 September 2011. You have not decided yet whether you’ll be there or not?

So we have outlined 7 reasons why one would take part in the event this year.

1. Scientific and Educational Programmes

Tight schedule of programmes may attract your attention due to a high variety of postgraduate courses on different respiratory themes: Interventional Pulmonology, Update of phenotypes of asthma and COPD, ERS/ACCP jointly organised: evidence-based approach to advanced respiratory care, Treatment of obstructive sleep apnoea, etc. Informative lectures and interactive lectures may be very useful for your research, while participating in workshops would allow you to follow the discussion and share your opinion, which is not the least important argument. „Meet the Professor” seminars are elaborated for those interested in the exchange of ideas with leading experts in the respiratory field.

2. Personal Presentation

That would be too simple to attend the Congress and not to express yourself. That is why the next reason is sharing your work, be it a poster, or e-presentation. Probably not everyday we have an opportunity to show the results of our work and to get a feedback at the international conference of the same level.

3. Meet colleagues and friends

Being a part of community united for several days by a common aim – speak about respiratory diseases is also a great chance to meet colleagues and friends. Every year thousands of people attend the congress, and for sure one can get acquainted with interesting people or merely see old friends.

4. Press conferences

Press conferences is another point that may draw your attention if you are a mass media representative. Attending the conferences, gathering information, listening leaders of opinion in respiratory care and asking questions may be very useful for those who want to promote lung health worldwide.

5. HERMES examination

You can take HERMES examination in adult or paediatric respiratory medicine which was created for trainees and specialists interested in knowledge assessment according to European standards. Successful completion of the examination leads to European Diploma in Respiratory Medicine and permits be part of the HERMES Diplomates Club.

6. Exhibition

There is an activity one would like to accomplish between attending the courses and presenting the posters. Namely visiting the exhibition of world-known pharmaceutical and engineering companies, medical bookshops and technological corporations that generously offer information, materials, equipment and create a special atmosphere of international collaboration.

7. Amsterdam

And finally who would stay at ERS Congress round the clock? Certainly you would like to see the Amsterdam in all its’ autumn beauty. Therefore there would defenitely be time for city tours, excursions through historic centre with all its sights and relaxing while a canal cruise.

Pictures made by Liudmila Corlateanu.

Hopefully now you have made up your mind.
See you in Amsterdam! J

Respiratory Decade supporting Global action against the non-communicable diseases

Respiratory Decade is active participant of the global action against the non-communicable diseases (NCD)!
Of 57 million global deaths in 2008, 36 million, or 63%, were due to NCD. The four main NCDs are cardiovascular diseases, cancers, diabetes and chronic lung diseases. The burden of these diseases is rising disproportionately among lower income countries and populations. In 2008, nearly 80% of noncommunicable disease deaths -- 29 million -- occurred in low- and middle-income countries with about 29% of deaths occuing before the age of 60 in these countries.
The leading causes of NCD deaths in 2008 were cardiovascular diseases (17 million deaths, or 48% of all NCD deaths), cancers (7.6 million, or 21% of all NCD deaths), and respiratory diseases, including asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (4.2 million). Diabetes caused another 1.3 million deaths.

Heart and lung diseases, cancer and diabetes touch millions of people worldwide, inflicting great loss of life and suffering, as well as placing great socioeconomic burdens on families, communities and countries worldwide. But action against the global epidemics of these noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) and the shared risk factors that contribute to them has now being taken on a global scale.
Governments, civil society, many business leaders, academia, healthcare providers and the United Nations family are uniting in the fight against NCDs ahead of the 2011 UN General Assembly High-level Meeting on the Prevention and Control of NCDs. This films describes the issues, challenges and opportunities to scale up international action against these diseases.

As wrote Professor Geneau in Lancet: "neglect of chronic disease by international agencies and national governments is a political, not a technical, failure since cost-effective interventions are available".

RESPIRATORY DECADE suggests working together on common aim: to help people with Non-Communicable Diseases and to prevent the increase of these diseases in the world by simple interventions on tobacco, salt, diets, alcohol!

ASTHMA ART CONTEST 2011

On World Asthma Day 2011 (3 May), people with asthma and severe asthma are being encouraged to get creative for a unique art contest which will explore what it is like to live with the condition.
The contest is open to people of all ages and will help bridge the gap between doctors’ understanding of the condition and a person’s experience of it.
Asthma is a major health problem around the world and is a one of the world’s major non-communicable diseases. Not all types of asthma are the same and current treatments adopt a uniform approach, meaning they don’t work well for everybody. The art contest is part of a European-wide project called U-BIOPRED - Unbiased BIOmarkers in PREDiction of respiratory disease outcomes. U-BIOPRED is a research project funded by the Innovative Medicines Initiative (IMI), to understand more about severe asthma that involves scientists from universities, research institutes, the pharmaceutical industry and small companies.
U-BIOPRED will help scientists understand more about severe asthma. The researchers will look at how severe asthma differs from one person to another in the hope of uncovering more effective treatments in the future.

                                            U-BIOPRED video

The competition is open to any person with asthma and all types of art work from dance, music and poetry, to paintings and photography are encouraged. The top three winning entries will be displayed on the U-BIOPRED website.
The winner will be invited to the European Respiratory Society Congress in Amsterdam (24-25 September) to receive their award and see their winning entry presented at the opening ceremony. Professor Peter Sterk, project lead, said:  “The U-BIOPRED project aims to understand more about asthma and severe asthma. One important way we can do this is to hear from patients directly. This contest enables patients to express, through art, what the condition is like and how it impacts upon their life.”

Professor Peter STERK
University of Amsterdam

“The winning entry will be the piece which best conveys what it is like to have asthma and we want to hear from anyone with the condition, whether you are a budding or artist, or a complete beginner.”

The closing date for all entries is 1 June 2011. You can enter the art contest by uploading a digital copy of your artwork to the website. For full terms and conditions, visit: www.ubiopred.european-lung-foundation.org/artcontest.
