Launch of International Collaboration in Asthma, Allergy and Immunology

The reasons for the negative effects of allergies and asthma are variable, but in most countries patients with these diseases are either inadequately or improperly treated, resulting in a greater negative effect and resources expended. The awareness of these trends among politicians, other policymakers, patients, the general public, and many health care insurers outside the specialty of allergy and immunology is limited. This lack of awareness and knowledge gap has resulted in reduced resources allocated to treat and promote research for these diseases.
Recognizing a lack of consensus-driven information and general recommendations, four of the most influential allergy/immunology professional organizations have joined forces to launch the International Collaboration in Asthma, Allergy and Immunology (iCAALL). Participating in iCAALL are the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology (AAAAI), the American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology (ACAAI), the European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (EAACI) and the World Allergy Organization (WAO).
iCAALL is designed to collect and disseminate consensus-driven information about allergies, asthma and immunological diseases. Communicating this knowledge can positively impact diagnosis and treatment, as well as cost containment and policy decisions.
A major focus of this initiative is the production of a series of International Consensus (ICON) reports. These documents offer general recommendations based on global challenges in caring for patients with allergic and immunologic diseases.
The first ICON was dedicated to food allergies and was just published:

World Rare Disease Day 2012

On the last day of February, millions of people around the world will be observing World Rare Disease Day.  There will be activities across the U.S., throughout Europe, in Canada, in Australia, in China and elsewhere to focus attention on rare diseases as a public health issue.

In the U.S., a disease is considered rare if it affects fewer than 200,000 people.  Some rare diseases such as Lou Gehrig’s disease (ALS) are well known to the public.  However, many others are not, and you can imagine the loneliness of having a disease that most people have never heard of, that has no treatment, and that is not even being studied by any medical researchers.
Keenan Cahill became internet legend, he is a boy with Maroteaux–Lamy syndrome. We want to share one of his inspirational videos, which demonstrates to everybody that people with rare conditions are fantastic!
Fifth International Rare Disease Day has a very beautiful motto:
"Rare but Strong Together"

Dear Respiratory friends,
I want to share with you my experience from Respiratory Masterclass in COPD and Asthma which took place in Dubai, 21-22 January 2012. The meeting was dedicated to the new COPD and Asthma guidelines, which were launched recently.
There were 2 days full of new knowledge and experience. Faculty team was conducted by Professor Paul Jones from St Georges University of London, UK - world-known leader in respiratory research. Everybody knows his questionnaire: Saint-George Respiratory Questionnaire (SGRQ) which became classical, was validated in many languages and new one COPD Assessment Test (CAT test), which became the part of new GOLD classification of COPD.

There were many brilliant presentations by world opinion leaders in Asthma and COPD. Professor David Manino from University of Kentucky College of Public Health Lexington, USA presented new statistical data about COPD: COPD: the big picture.
