World COPD Day 2014
Today is World COPD Day 2014! Please feel free to talk about #COPD
every day and every possible moment, but not only today! Spreed the
word! COPD remains the important cause of death at the global level!
World COPD Day is organized by the Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) in collaboration with health care professionals and COPD patient groups throughout the world. Its aim is to raise awareness about chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and improve COPD care throughout the world
Each year GOLD chooses a theme and coordinates preparation and distribution of World COPD Day materials and resources. World COPD Day activities are organized in each country by health care professionals, educators, and members of the public who want to help reduce the burden of COPD.
The first World COPD Day was held in 2002. Each year organizers in more than 50 countries worldwide have carried out activities, making the day one of the world's most important COPD awareness and education events.

Chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension Awareness Day
Today is Chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension Awareness Day!
This year November 18th has been assigned as the official Chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension Awareness Day. This will be the first ever awareness day focused
on CTEPH or chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension.
Chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH) is a form of pulmonary hypertension caused by blood clots in the lungs (pulmonary embolism).
In most patients who have suffered a blood clot, blood thinners are
enough to restore blood flow and prevent the development of pulmonary
hypertension. However, a minority of patients will not respond
adequately to blood thinners and may develop CTEPH. Patients may even
develop CTEPH without a known history of blood clots.

World Diabet Day 2014: link between Respiratory Disorders and Diabetes
Dear Respiratory Friends today is World Diabet Day 2014!
Diabetes may act as an independent factor negatively affecting
lung structure and function. Diabetes can cause muscle and neuronal damage, which
is relevant to deficient function of respiratory muscles. Moreover, diabetes is independently
associated with lower physical performance, which can be disabling for patients with
COPD, who already have some limitation in physical performance.
DM is able to detrimentally
affect alveolar capillary membrane and decrease DLCO, similarly to other microangiopathic
complications, such as diabetic nephropathy. Furthermore, DM is associated with the
presence of glucose in airway secretions, and this may contribute to the increased
risk of pulmonary infections seen in diabetics. MetS can increase the risk of COPD
exacerbation, and diabetes is associated with worsened outcomes of COPD flares. On
the top of that, coexistent OSA may increase the risk for type 2 DM in some individuals.

their medication while we have also developed a bridge to keep the patients and
the caregivers and their loved ones connected always. It also involves staying
in touch with your personal doctor so he or she can stay updated on how the
treatment is progressing, staying in touch with the pharmacists for automatic
