Spirometry in 2016: Phone lung monitoring is just a 1-800 call away

Back in 2012, researchers from the University of Washington (UW) introduced a new tool - SpiroSmart for those suffering from respiratory problems in the form of a smartphone app that measures lung health. While this may have improved access to care for many, it didn't mean a great deal to those without a smartphone. The team is now looking to expand the reach of its technology by designing a system that allows patients to call in from anywhere in the world, from any phone, to gauge the health of their lungs.
Chronic lung conditions like asthma or COPD can require careful monitoring, often involving regular visits to the clinic. This mightn't be too problematic if you live in a big, modern city, but in developing countries a trip to the doctor can mean hours or even days on the road.
The idea is that users of the SpiroCall service call a 1-800 number from anywhere in the world and perform a hard exhale, just as they would when using a commercial spirometer. The audio is collected and relayed to a server, where the team's algorithms translate the breath into a reading of the patient's lung function.

The event, which is being organised in conjunction with FC Barcelona and the European Commission's "Ex-Smokers are unstoppable" campaign, will encourage the public to score a goal for lung health by participating in a free lung test.

In addition to lung function testing, visitors will have the chance to sign up to the 'Quit Smoking With Barça' programme; a unique smoking cessation programme developed by FC Barcelona and the European Commission (EC), which is helping more than 60,000 smokers across Europe stop smoking.

Launch of World Spirometry Day 2012 in Moldova

On 18 May 2012 we organized conference dedicated to World Spirometry Day 2012 in Moldova.
It was official launch of
World Spirometry Day 2012 in Moldova with workshop on spirometry for prepare team for World Spirometry Day 2012 on 27 June 2012.
The 2012 campaign coincides with the Olympic Games and aims to encourage people to exercise and look after their lungs regardless of their age or physical ability. We discussed our plans and details of organization of   World Spirometry Day 2012 in Moldova.
Furthermore I made a presentation of European Respiratory Society with new membership structure; especially we paid attention to the Silver membership which is absolutely free of charge for persons under 35 years. Such kind of membership can be of great interest for Moldavian students and young doctors, as they can have access to various materials and useful sources.
Also I presented new guidelines in COPD. It is beyond all doubt that the conference had an impact on the audience; it encouraged the active participation in such kind of events and appealed to the main aim - to promote public awareness and to draw particular attention to the respiratory diseases detection and treatment.

We want to remind you about success of First World Spirometry Day 2010!
